Public do buy products from direct selling companies because of their uniqueness of their products and the service to explain and deliver to customers.  They want the industry to be regulated with clear guidelines and no get rich quick schemes. 

If that is done, they would participate in the business as some view that it is a good business opportunity.  It is because that there were people cheated by get rich quick schemes that people shy away from direct selling.
